Cheshire sweeps Hamden in Fall Ball Opener
Matt Jefferis knocked in two runs with a 9th inning single, leading the Cheshire
Rams to a win in game two and a doubleheader sweep of Hamden Saturday at
Bartlem Park.  It was Jefferis' third hit of the game and broke a 1-1 tie, making a
winner of Jordan Kubilus, who pitched the 8th inning.  Ryan Rougeot picked up the
save striking out two in the 9th.  In game 1, Dan Flynn went 2-3 with a double and
John Kubilus and Dan Manke each knocked in a run as the Rams rode a solid
combined pitching effort from Jefferis and Mike Hathaway walking off with a 4-3 win
in the bottom of the seventh on a throwing error by the Hamden pitcher on a sacrifice
bunt.

In game 1 Cheshire drew first blood in the third.  Ryan Fowler led off with a walk and
stole second.  Brian O'Reilly bunted him to third.  He would score on a Manke
grounder to short with the middle infielders playing back.  Flynn then lined a double
to left center but was stranded.  Meanwhile, Jefferis was shutting down the Hamden
offense through four.  He left the game in the fifth after surrendering a walk, a single,
and a double.  Hathaway replaced Jefferis and gave up two singles before getting
the last two outs on a ground ball and a strikeout.  The damage had been done
however as Cheshire found themselves down 3-1 going to the bottom of the sixth.
With one out Flynn singled to center.  He was then picked off by the pitcher and he
took off for second, reaching second when the throw from first got away from the
shortstop.  The ball rolled into short left field and Flynn was able to get to third.  He
would score when John Kubilus hit a ball into the shortstop hole for a single to make
it 3-2.  Kubilus then stole second and , one out later scored the tying run on a single
by Mike Hathaway.  Hathaway would set down Hamden in the sixth and seventh.  He
got some help in the seventh when Brian O'Reilly cut a ball off in right center that was
heading for the gap and threw a strike to second to cut down the inning's lead off
hitter.  The bottom of the seventh started with Tyler Robertson getting hit by a pitch.
Ryan Rougeot then lined a single to left to put runners at 1st and 2nd with nobody
out.  Ryan Fowler would then lay down a bunt to move the runners to 2nd and 3rd.
However, the Hamden pitcher overthrew the first baseman allowing Robertson to
cross the plate with the winning run.

Game two was a pitching duel with Ryan Fowler and Hathaway going the first 7
innings giving up only one run.  With Cheshire down 1-0 in the 5th, Rougeot led off
with a single and stole second.  One out later, Adam Rider singled to right, sending
Rougeot to third.  Rider would proceed to get in a rundown allowing the run to score
from third to tie the game.  The game would remain tied until the top of the ninth.
Catcher Tim Budd led off with a single.  Manke reached on an error by the shortstop.
Flynn sacrificed the runners to second and third with one out.  Hamden intentionally
walked John Kubilus to load the bases.  With the infield in Jefferis would then find
the hole in the defense right up the middle scoring Budd and Manke with the
go-ahead runs.  Rougeot would enter the game and pick up the save and the sweep
for Cheshire.  This game was full of great defensive plays by Cheshire.  Hathaway
made a diving catch from the mound to foil a sacrifice attempt.  Brian O'Reilly made a
great diving catch going to the line in right field to save extra bases, and first
baseman Kubilus made a couple of great throws to second to cut down lead runners
and keep Hamden out of scoring position.  Cheshire will try to stay undefeated
Sunday at 10:00 when they host Amity Gold at Bartlem Park.

Rams Sweep Wolcott in Odd Morning Affair
In a doubleheader Saturday morning at the BAW in
Wolcott, Cheshire avoided dogs in the outfield and a
late arriving Wolcott squad to sweep the locals 13-8
and 9-5.  In game 1, Cheshire spotted Wolcott an 8-1
lead before waking up and answering.  In a second
inning that produced 13 runs between the two teams,
a couple of bad hops on a field that makes Bartlem
seem playable and a dog chasing balls in the gaps,
the Rams came out of the inning tied 8-8.  With all that
offense, it was a Brian O'Reilly bunt in the 3rd that
scored Tyler Robertson that provided the eventual
winning run.  Cheshire would score 4 runs in the sixth
to put the game away.  Dan Flynn knocked in three
runs in the game and Tyler Robertson had three hits
and 2 RBI.  Jordan Kubilus also chipped in with three
hits.  Hathaway picked up his third win despite giving
up 7 earned runs.  Adam Rider came in and shut
down Wolcott over the final three innings to pick up the
save.
Game two was dog-free and, although starting late
again as Wolcott waited for players to arrive, was more
conventional.  Cheshire jumped out to a 5-0 lead in
the third.  In the first, Matt Jefferis knocked in Flynn,
who had reached on an error and advanced on a balk.
Jordan Kubilus would then score his brother, John on
a sacrafice fly to make it 2-0.  John had singled earlier.
In the third, Flynn was hit by a pitch, stole second and
advanced to third when the throw went into centerfield
and scored when the centerfielder threw wildly to third.
A single by Jefferis and RBI singles by Robertson and
Adam Rider made it 5-0.  Wolcott would put a couple
runs on the board in the third, but Cheshire would
answer with a run in the fourth when Hathaway
walked, stole 2nd and scored on a John Kubilus
single.  In the fifth, Tim Budd singled, Brian O'Reilly
was hit by a pitch, and Mike Hathaway drilled a 2-run
triple to center.  Flynn would plate Hathaway with a
sacrifice fly to complete the scoring for the Rams.
Jordan Kubilus would come in to pitch the 6th and 7th
innings to close out the long day.  Cheshire will play
North Haven at Bartlem Park Sunday at Noon.

Matt Jefferis gave up just one run in five innings and
Dan Flynn had a two run single to break open a close
game as the Rams went on to a 5-2 win against a
very good North Haven Team.  Jordan Kubilus pitched
the last two innings to pick up the save, striking out
the side in the seventh.  Kubilus also knocked in a
run with an RBI single in the first.  The Ram defense
played a solid game, led by two outstanding plays by
catcher Tim Budd on foul pops behind the plate.

Matt Jefferis struck out 13 and Jordan Kubilus went 3-3
with 2 RBI as Cheshire took game one 6-1 over Amity.
The Rams went on to sweep the doubleheader 5-1 in a
game shortened by a tornado warning.  Jordan Kubilus
struck out 7 over 5 innings for the winners and Ryan
Fowler pitched the 6th and struck out two.  Fowler also
dealt the big offensive blow with a3-run double to break
the game open in the third.  Matt Jefferis and Kubilus had
the other RBI for Cheshire.  On Sunday, the Rams beat a
good Lyman Hall team 9-3.  Cheshire is now 12-1 on the
year.
Rams Pitchers Shine, Sweep Weekend, Now 15-1
The Cheshire Rams Fall Baseball team got excellent pitching performances from Ryan Fowler Saturday,
Ryan Rougeout Sunday, and Matt Jefferis Monday as they continued their winning ways with wins over
Meriden, Wolcott, and Lyman Hall, moving their record to 15-1.  Jordan Kubilus was dominant in relief,
striking out 8 of the 12 batters he faced, appearing in all three games.  In Saturday's game it was John
Kubilus leading the way for the Rams, going 2-3 including a long double.  Dan Manke knocked in two runs
as well in the 5-0 win.  Sunday it was Manke again (3-3) and Jordan Kubilus (3-4, 3 RBI) leading the
offense in a 6-2 win.  Ryan Fowler and Adam Rider each had two hits for Cheshire.  On Columbus Day, the
Rams capitalized on four Lyman Hall miscues to win a 5-3 game at Bartlem.  Connor David(2-3) and John
Kubilus each had long RBI doubles to lead the offense.  Jefferis struck out nine, allowing only 4 hits in 6
innings.   Stay with us later in the week for the schedule for the weekend as we move closer to the playoffs.
