Rams Upset by NFA, Exciting Season Ends
Kastine Evans had 22 kills and 14 assists and Katie Wilson 17 kills, 11 digs and eight blocks as No. 12
Norwich Free Academy stormed back to beat No. 4 Cheshire — the defending state champion — 21-25, 20-
25, 25-20, 25-18, 16-14 in its quarterfinal match. Cheshire jumped out in front of this one, winning the first two
games, but after losing a very tough third game, NFA had the momentum and rode it to the victory, ending
Cheshire's defense of the LL crown. It was a great year for Cheshire capturing the SCC Title.
2008 SCC Champion Cheshire Rams
Ram Volleyball Loses Heartbreaker Furious Comeback Falls Short in SCC Finals Early on it appeared Xavier was primed to make quick work of Cheshire, winning the first two games rather handily. But the Rams seem to come to life with their backs to the wall. Earlier in the regular season Cheshire overcame an early two-game deficit to hand the Falcons their lone loss. And in the SCC semifinals against Shelton on Tuesday, the Rams fell behind by two games only to rally and win the next three. On Thursday, the suddenly aggressive Rams took control in the third game with strong serves, clutch blocks and their own seemingly unstoppable weapon in 6-foot-8 sophomore outside hitter Nate Howard. Senior Steve Sutherland served six crucial points late in the third game to help Cheshire get on the board 25-17. Howard blistered several of his 20 kills as game four was never in doubt, with successive blocks by Sutherland and Jordan Attwood sending it to a decisive fifth game. In the fifth game, Sean Nelson’s block off a Howard spike gave Xavier a 3-2 lead and the adrenaline boost it needed. The Falcons soon went ahead 12-6, and clinched the title on a Nelson kills by Casey Tallie on the final two points. XAVIER 3, CHESHIRE 2 Game scores: Xavier (25-20, 25-17, 17-25, 17-25, 15- 8).
