5th Grade A Cheshire A 20 Tri-Town 7 The Cheshire 5th Grade A team spotted Tri-Town a 7-0 lead in the first half. The Rams had trouble converting on 3rd and 4th down. The defense continued to stop Tri-Town but the score remained 7-0 going into the 4th when Cheshire fumbled as they were moving towards the tying touchdown. It looked as if Tri-Town was looking to put the game away. On a third and 5, they broke a run up the middle that took off up the left sideline. Cheshire outside linebacker Eric Angelone wrapped up the running back, took the ball right out of his hands, and returned it 45 yards for the touchdown to make it 7-6. Ethan Bronson got a great block, enabling Angelone to score. Angelone added the conversion off right tackle to tie the score. Cheshire then forced a three and out to cause a punting situation. The snap to the punter was off target and the ever present Bronson was there to tackle the punter before he could advance the ball. Cheshire went right back to Angelone, who ripped one right up the middle for a 20 yard touchdown to give the Rams the lead. The conversion failed and Cheshire was up 13-7. Tri-Town continued to fight, breaking another run up the left side. They should have tried the other side. Angelone again came from his linebacker position to stop the run and rip the ball loose and Cheshire recovered the fumble. With the Rams looking to keep the ball on the ground to run out the clock, Nick Fumo rambled up the middle to get Cheshire into scoring position again. Angelone would take a pitch around right end and go in for his 3rd touchdown of the quarter. Will Graikowski ran in for the conversion to provide the final score of 20-7. Outstanding defense by the Cheshire squad allowed them to stay in the game early. Cole Escoto was in the Tri-Town backfield all day, disrupting plays and making tackles for losses. Jack LaMadeliene had a solid day, recovering a fumble to stall a Tri-Town drive in the first half. Joseph Wright, Drew Riccitelli, Mike Sansone were very active on defense, stuffing many running plays. Cheshire is now 2-0 and will visit a very strong Madison A team next Sunday. The offensive line was really great all day behind Owen Reach, Nick Nelson, Ben Shadeck, Will Donahue, Christian Horgan and TE's David Arcesi and Dan Covel who blow holes open for the offense all day. The Defense was stellar all day. Nick Quint and John Hulten and Eamon Fitzpatrick kept North Branford at bay and didn't allow an outside run to hurt the Rams. Overall the team had a great day and are back in action next Sunday at 11:00 am against Guilford.
Cheshire B 26 Guilford 0 Posting their second shutout is as many weeks the defense was as tough as ever. It was a great effort by the entire D-line and Linebackers Dave Arcesi, Nick Nelson, Jason Como, Michael Jeffery, Jack Raba and Coulten White stood out to lead the team to a 3-1 start and 2-1 in conference play. The game started off with a bang with a long kick off return by Michael Jeffery for forty yards. Two plays later Jeffery found the end zone with a fifteen yard run. After a great catch by Tim Hoynes, Nick Quint scored on a reverse twenty yards out. Jack Raba hit Michael Jeffery with a quick pass his second touchdown of the day. Matt Moran scored on a long eighty yard run to put the game out of reach on the teams 4th possession. Jack Raba had a great day running the offense and had several long runs on the day. With the score 26 - 0 at halftime the second offense came in and did a great job moving the ball up and down the field for several first downs. Eamon Fitzpatrick, John Hutlen and Dan Covel all had great runs in the second half. Overall the offensive line had another great day blowing holes open for the runners all day. The team is back in action next Sunday at Amity.
Cheshire A 18 Madison A 13 The Cheshire Fifth Grade A team held Madison A out of the end zone with 2 minutes left in the game to hold onto a come-from-behind 18-13 win at the Surf Club. Madison had a first and goal from the 6 and could not score, courtesy of Drew Riccitelli and the rest of the pursuing Ram defense. Riccitelli spent most of the fourth quarter in the Cougar backfield, disrupting runs and blowing up plays. Eric Angelone and Matt Rosadino also had big stops in the second half to allow the offense to gain the lead. This one started fast with Nick Fumo recovering a Madison fumble on the first play from scrimmage, giving the Rams great field position. Cheshire could not capitalize on that opportunity, but after a trade of possessions, Angelone broke a 27 yard run to get the Rams down to the 27 yard line. Two plays later, Angelone broke free down the right sideline for a 25 yard touchdown to put Cheshire up 6-0. The conversion failed. The lead, however, was short-lived. On the Cougars next play, they hit on a 60 yard touchdown pass over the middle to the big tight end. The conversion was stuffed and we were tied at 6. The teams traded possessions again when Madison intercepted a Cheshire pass. A sustained drive brought the Cougars right down the field and they ran right up the middle for a touchdown and a conversion to go up 13-6 at the half. Cheshire came out quickly in the third quarter as Angelone took a handoff up the middle. Looking as if the play had been stuffed, Angelone broke the tackles and bolted to the sideline for a 57 yard touchdown, his second of the game and eighth of the young season. The Cheshire defense then took over the game. Ethan Bronson had a timely sack to start the series. A false start created a 2nd and 19. A subsequent sweep attempt was snuffed out by Spencer Harte and Angelone making it 3rd and 18. On fourth down, Fumo broke up a pass play giving the Rams a 1st down on the 48. A false start made it 1st and 15 from the 43. Mike Sansone then executed a perfect misdirection counter on an inside handoff to Fumo, who rumbled 14 yards to set up a second and 1. One play later, Angelone broke two tackles to gain 12 yards down to the 21. He then took a pitch from Sansone and sprinted around right end, breaking another tackle at the goal line to score and put Cheshire ahead 18-13. Madison foiled the conversion attempt so the Rams hald on to a slight 5 point lead in the fourth quarter. The Rams held Madison on their next series with Riccitelli coming up with a sack and another tackle for loss. However, the Cougar defense was up to the task, pushing the Cheshire offense backwards. When Sansone was stopped on a keeper on fourth an 17, Madison took over on the Ram 16, 1st down with 4 minutes left. Knowing that a touchdown would win the game, the Cougars kept the ball in the hands of their best players, gaining a 1st and goal from the six. That's when Riccitelli, Cole Escoto, Angelone and Rosadino came up with the big stops. After stopping the Cougars on fourth down, Sansone, who did a masterful job running the offense all day, set up in victory formation and took a knee. Angelone finished with 137 yards on 7 carries and 3 touchdowns. Cheshire moves to 3-0 on the season and will visit East Haven at 3:00 next Sunday.

5th Grade Cheshire B Defense Shuts Down Cheshire A Attack 13-0 Both Teams Now at 4-2 Going into Last Week of Season The Cheshire B defense of Coach John Raba had a plan. They were going to take away the Cheshire A running game, led by Eric Angelone, Nick Fumo, Will Graikowski, and Mike Sansone. The plan worked and the B team scored on a couple of long drives to win the battle of Cheshire 13-0. Every time Angelone got the ball, he was swarmed by 6 or 7 Cheshire B tacklers. It was not, however, "sellout defense" on the part of Raba's squad. Cheshire A tried to debunk the strategy, running a number of misdirection plays and reverses, but the disciplined B defense held their positions and tackled very well. Full Story

Both teams came into the game tied for 3rd place. This was the 6th shutout of the year for the B team. The offensive line dominated East Haven throughout the game. The play of Will Donahue, Owen Reach, Nick Nelson, Tom Horgan and Ben Shadeck opened some great holes all day. To open the scoring Matt Moran had a great run 50 yard where he broke 4 tackles on his way to another big run. Moran is one of the fastest players in the league, and if he can get a seam he can usually hit paydirt. Jack Raba and Mike Jeffery also had touchdowns on the day behind some great blocking of Jay Como. Como wore down the East Haven team with some hard runing in the 3rd quarter. Dan Covel, Tim Hoynes, Dave Arcesi had steller defensive play to limit East Haven’s offense. Overall the team has played very well and everyone has been instrumental in the team’s success. Cheshire B will host Guilford Wednesday night at the High School. Please come out and support the boys! |
5th Grade Valiant Effort Comes Up Short Against Undefeated Madison B, 12-6 Facing a Madison B team that was 6-0 and outscored their opponents 137-12, you would have thought that a good showing would be a solid result in this one. However, leaving the field, it was hard to swallow a 12-6 Madison victory. It was hard to swallow because the Cheshire boys played their hearts out, outplaying the more talented Madison group in the second half, but could not convert a 4th down and inches inside the 15 yard line to extend a possible game-tying or winning drive. Madison started the game strong, marching down the field on a long drive and scoring on a nice run to make it 6-0. Although Madison controlled the field position for the rest of the half, the Cheshire A defense came up big in the red zone. Cole Escoto came up with a diving interception inside the 10 yard line to foil one drive. One of the nicest plays of the year came on a beautiful pass over the middle from quarterback Will Graikowski to TE Ethan Bronson. Madison defender made a TD saving tackle on the play. Halftime arrived and the score was only 6-0 thanks to the spirited play of the defense. The Ram defensive line and linebackers stuffed the tauted Madison running game until the first drive of the second half, when the talented Madison back broke loose for a long touchdown making it 12-0. However, the Cheshire squad continued their confident play and when Matt Rosadino broke through the line on an inside handoff and sprinted to the outside for a 55 yard run down to the left sideline to the Cougar 10, you saw a slight kink in the armor. Two plays later, tailback Eric Angelone took a hand and started to the right. He ran into a logjam there, broke a couple of tackles, reversed his field, shot up the middle and sprung to the outside and raced to the pilon to pull the Rams to within a touchdown at 12-6. The Ram defense would get Cheshire the ball back two more times, and the offense would move the ball. Big plays on defense by Drew Riccitelli, Angelone, and Ethan Bronson got Cheshire the ball back on the Madison 40 with about 3 minutes left. When an Angelone third down carry was curiously marked inches short of the first down, Cheshire decided against a sneak and instead, the handoff in the backfield was stuffed for a 3 yard loss and a turnover on downs. Cheshire had a chance to get the ball back after a fourth down run by Madison was ruled a first down with an obvious false start that was not called. Cheshire will await their playoff fate when the pairings are announced around 9:00 tonight. Check back here for all the playoff match ups as soon as I receive them.
