Xavier Defense Stifles Rams , Win 9-6 Despite 5 Turnovers Mike Mastrioanni ran the ball 38 times for 240 yards as Xavier was able to overcome 5 turnovers to eke out a win in front of 3500 fans at McClary Complex. In a battle of the state's top defenses and the bad weather, a 0-0 tie going into the fourth quarter was predictable. So when Mastrioanni broke free with 9:25 left for a 6 yard touchdown run (Joe Lynch kick) to put the Falcons up 7-0, the crowd grew silent. However, after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Xavier for excessive celebration and an out-of-bounds kickoff, the Rams took over on the 50....On the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Michael Ecke hit Sebastian Little over the middle for a 50 yard touchdown to make it 7-6. However, an illegal substitution penalty on the conversion backed the Rams up and Kyle Pulek's kick sailed off to the left. Mastrioanno and the Xavier offensive line would then take over the game, ripping off big chunks off yardage and killing big chunks of clock. Cheshire would get the ball back after a great goal line stand by the defense but could not get a first down deep in their own territory and on fourth down from their own one snapped the ball out of the end zone for a safety. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Falcons. The Ram defense did not quit. After three penalties on Xavier negated some big runs, Cheshire would get the ball back one more time on their own 23 but with no time outs left, ran out of time. These are two good teams who may not have seen the last of each other this year, with a possible matchup in the LL playoffs.
Rams Fall Short to Hand 14-13 With the Rams driving down the field, looking for the winning score, a rare and curious chop block penalty was called, backing Cheshire up 15 yards with 52 seconds left in the game. The Rams had a 1st down on the Hand 20 before the call. With the wind blowing in the face of the offense, it was evident that Cheshire would need the first down in order to provide a field goal opportunity. Quarterback Michael Ecke had driven the Rams right down the field with six completions to Sebastian Little, Dan Barnes, and Jake Scinto. With 1st and 25 from the 35, Ecke misfired to Scinto on the right sideline. He then threw a swing pass to Scinto in the left flat with blockers in front of him, but Scinto slipped on the turf, creating a 3rd and 30 from the 40 with 44 seconds left. Ecke then hit Scinto for 10 down to the 30. He then hit Chris DiDonato at the 20. Di Donato tried to flip the ball back to Scinto to gain the first down, but DiDonato's knee was down when he made the catch, therefore turning the ball over on downs. Hand took a knee and the clock expired, handing the Rams their second loss in a row. The Rams made a game of it after spotting Hand a 14-0 lead when the Tigers hit on an 80 yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second half. On the ensuing kickoff, Max Slade returned it to the CHS 43. The Rams put Jake Scinto in the wildcat formation in the backfield. The forst snap to Scinto was bobbled but Scinto scooped it up and rambled 57 yards to pull the Rams to within a touchdown. Kyle Pulek's conversion made it 14-7. The Cheshire defense would then step up in a big way, not allowing the Hand offense anything the rest of the game. Cheshire would get the ball back at their own 40 and immediately marched down the field with Scinto, Sam Pascale, and Slade doing the bulk of the running. Slade also hit Little with a 20 yard completion over the middle. Slade would eventually score on a quarterback sneak to pull the Rams to within a point. On a controversial call, Pulek's kick was called wide left although it clearly looked to be inside the uprights. The questionable calls would be a theme of the evening, as can be the case with games played at the Surf Club. By my count, there were 10 penalties called on Cheshire and not a single call whistled against Hand. The Rams will try to bounce back on Friday at 4:30 when they travel to Wilbur Cross
Rams Cannot Punch Through at Cross, Fall 18-14 Trailing 18-14, Cheshire had the ball 1st and goal from the Cross 8 with under 3 minutes left. Three runs and an incomplete pass later, it was all over as Cross held off the Rams 18-14 in New Haven. In a see saw battle that saw Cheshire hold leads of 7-0 and 14-6 (briefly), Cross drove the field to open the second half, powered by back-to-back long runs from James Ward of 36 and 29 respectively. Quarterback Dohntay Long would take it in for a 5 yard touchdown to give the Governors the 18-14 lead. That would be enough as the Rams final drive, aided by a defensive holding call on 4th and 7, fell short in the end. Big plays on the drive were a Mike Skibicki 11 yard run and a Max Slade keeper for 13 yards to get them in the red zone. Slade had a very effective game for the Rams, scoring both 1st half touchdowns on keepers, with the 2nd going for 14 yards. Kyle Pulek's 2nd PAT gave the Rams a 14-6 lead. However, Ward would take the ensuing kickoff 81 yards to make the game closer. The conversion failed and we went to the half at 14-12. Both teams exchanged series in the third quarter and early in the fourth before Cheshire took advantage of a short punt to get field position for the final drive, starting on the 50 after a 13 yard return by Slade. When Cheshire moved it to the 8, Slad tried to run it in but lost his footing for a loss of 1. Skibicki then tried on a dive play but was stuffed for no gain. On third down, Slade pitched to Sam Pascale to the left, but Pascale could not turn the corner and was run out of bounds after a gain of only one. Faced with a 4th and 8, Slade rolled out to his right. Just as he was ready to tuck and run, he saw Jake Scinto in the endzone, however the pass was low and Scinto could not come up with it, costing the Rams their 3rd straight loss. They will try to turn the season around when they host West Haven (5-0) on 10/22 at 7:00
